Sugarhouse Close, Edinburgh

Sugarhouse Close is a historic area located in Edinburgh’s Old Town, nestled off the Royal Mile. The name “Sugarhouse Close” originates from its past, when it was the site of a sugar refinery in the 18th century.

This area is characterized by its narrow alleys and historic buildings, which contribute to the distinctive charm and medieval atmosphere of Edinburgh’s Old Town.

Today, Sugarhouse Close is primarily known for its modern student accommodation, which has been thoughtfully integrated into historic surroundings.

The development of these accommodations aimed to preserve the architectural heritage while providing contemporary living spaces for students.

A mix of Blaxter and Witton Fell split face walling was used across various sections of this project including whole facades as well as infill sections.

We supplied dressed Blaxter surrounds with a Stugged and Droved finish to new openings and as part of some restoration work within the development.

This mix of old and new gives the project a modern aesthetic while considering the area’s rich history.
